How to Become an Instructor

All instructors in the Center for Workforce Training are carefully selected to provide our students with the finest quality training from qualified individuals in their specialty area. If you are a licensed health care provider or have a national certification in a health care field and are interested in becoming an instructor, complete and mail the Application to teach Health Profession Courses with all information requested to the address below.

I.  Application

In order to provide controls on the quality of education, a standard process of application for instructors and institutions have been established.  Application to teach must be made through a Professional-technical college and primary certification is issued in conjunction with the state Board of Nursing.


1.  Qualifications:

  • A current, valid and unencumbered license to practice in Idaho as a licensed professional nurse (RN)
  • Three years of clinical practice.
    • A Licensed Professional Nurses clinical experience must include at least two years of long-term or chronic care.
  • Show evidence of completion of appropriate “Methods of Adult Instruction” program.
    • This must be a minimum of a 40-hour certificated college level course
    • Proof of this course may include a certificate of successful completion or a transcript.
    • Prior teaching experience does not replace adult methodology coursework.
  • Attend an instructor orientation session before beginning instruction and yearly updates thereafter as requested by college.
  • Proof of CPR certification.

2.  Process:

  • Include a detailed resume, with dates and type of clinical experiences.
  • Provide college/technical school transcripts
  • Include the proof of methods of instruction course.
    • If you have not had a method of instruction course, there is one available through the BSU Center for Workforce Training.  Call: 208-426-1974 and ask for information on the Instructor Development Course. The cost is $295.00
  • Return all the requested information.
  • Your application will be reviewed by the Education Program Manager at the Center for Workforce Training.  CWT will submit all information to the Board of Nursing and you will be notified of approval; if your application is not approved you will be notified of the reasons, and you may re-apply when the deficiencies are corrected.
  • You will need to schedule an orientation session with the program manager.
  • After this process, you are considered eligible for vocational certification as an instructor.  However, if you are not certified.  In order to be certified you will need to take your verification of eligibility to the State Department of Professional-Technical Education and pay the fee for certification. For specific certification information, visit:  http://www.pte.state.id.us/certif/certific.htm.  Certification is not required for NA classes, however, the eligibility for certification is.
