For years, carpenters, electricians, masons, plumbers and other trades people have learned their skills under the watchful eye of a patient, experienced trades person. Times have changed, but the value of apprenticeship has not.

Students, who enroll in the Selland College of Applied Technology Apprenticeship Programs offered by the Center for Workforce Training, master a trade as full-time, paid employees under the direct supervision of a qualified journeyman. Students participate in on-the-job training ranging from one year (2,000 hours) to four years (8,000 hours) in the trade if their choice. In addition to the on-the-job hours, students participate in classroom instruction for a minimum of 144 hours per year. Classroom instruction runs approximately from September through April and is normally on weeknights or weekends.

A company, employer, union, or a combination of employers may sponsor students enrolling in an apprenticeship program. Many employers hire apprentices and some pay students’ fees. Apprentices generally start employment at 50 percent of the journey worker pay and receive increases at periodic intervals, until reaching full journey worker status and pay. For current job openings, contact the Department of Employment, check classified ads, or just contact contractors out of the phone book. It is recommended that companies participating in Idaho Apprenticeship programs be registered with the Office of Apprenticeship 208-321-2972.

Students may begin the classroom instruction through Boise State University without being employed as apprentices. But, in order to become a fully licensed or certificated journey worker in the State of Idaho, the job training portion is required.
